It was only in later life that I stumbled into a great career in the tech industry and I didn’t always feel like I belonged in a fancy corporate office. I’d like you to know that you do belong, no matter where you come from or if you are the first or only person in your family or community to work in a job or company. I went back to college in 2019 and completed a Higher Diploma in IT Management in DCU. I hadn’t participated in any formal learning in over 16 years so it took a bit of time to get used to studying again. I graduated top of my class with a Distinction and it was a proud moment to walk across the stage to receive my parchment with my family in the front row cheering me on.

Unfortunately in 2008 my role was made redundant due to the downturn in the economy at the time. This had a big impact on my life, particularly around my confidence as I felt that I was somehow to blame. I started in BofA in 2009, having been referred by a contact in the bank and have been very happily working here since then. I have been very lucky in my career – first working in Oriflame for over 20 years where I had opportunity to travel to some amazing places. Then an opportunity came later in my life, proving its never too late and I took it and now I am a qualified financial advisor doing a job that I also love. I have always worked hard for everything I have. In school I did OK, I could have done better, and I didn’t make it to 3rd level education until I was 36yrs old! And so now as an adult I am always challenging myself, to learn more about what I do day to day and explore new opportunities and educate myself on other interests outside of day to day work. I love Art, Cooking and Exercise, all so different to my role in The Echo, and I go for a walk or run every morning and listen to books and podcasts, this really helps me focus and is a great way for clearing my head of life’s stresses.

My mistakes through life are what have made me the strong person I am today, don’t ever look back at the hard times, just move forward and learn from it.

You as the next generation of business owners, employees, teachers, Gym instructors, Beauticians, Carpenters, Scientists and everything in between, have the world at your fingertips (literally)! Use that mobile phone to learn, educate yourself on what you might like to do in life, for communicating in the right way. Your access to the world around you is amazing and you can become an amazing person with it.

I am very proud of having crafted a life and a career in Ireland, starting from scratch, not knowing anyone and having very basic English when I first arrived (many moons ago).

Fast forward to the present day and I now have a wonderful family, a very good job that allows me to grow and work on projects that I care about, and friends all over the world.
